Whitelion started a sports role model program within the youth detention centres in Melbourne in 1999. In 2001 Whitelion saw a need to start a prevention program for young people who are at risk. The first area the program was piloted in was Mildura, as a high number of young people came from that region who populated the youth detention centres. After a few visit’s the community and Whitelion saw a shift in attitude to young people, and in some cases the young people changed the choices they were making, simply because one person (a positive role model) showed that they cared for a day and shared their personal life story and skills. Whitelion found that most of the young people were surrounded by negative choices and people, and most of them were growing up in a cycle of crime and poverty. Whitelion’s aim was to break the cycle.
