Youth Mentoring Week 2009, 25th - 31st of October.
Youth Mentoring Week, is an exciting time for Whitelion's Mentoring Programs. Whitelion represent 9 of the 150 youth mentoring programs across Victoria, and is now one of the largest in the state. Whitelion enjoys the support and advocacy of the Victorian Youth Mentoring Alliance, whom we are current members of. The VYMA and National Youth Mentoring Alliance have designated 26th October to 1st November as Youth Mentoring Week, and have encouraged and provided support and resources for youth mentoring programs to get together and celebrate the great work that's done in the sector.
Whitelion are celebrating Youth Mentoring Week in a number of ways. On Monday 26th October, Whitelion CEO Mark Watt, and Mentoring Team Leader Allison Trethowan attended the launch of Youth Mentoring Week, a "Celebration of Youth Mentoring" at the Melbourne Zoo, along with representatives of other mentoring programs around the state.
Whitelion have also been hot in the media this week, with 3 separate radio appearances by staff, mentors and young people. First up, riding high on the recent launch of "You and I: Stories from the Whitelion Mentoring Program", a book showcasing some remarkable mentoring match stories, one of the featured matches, David Imber and Steven Watts, appeared on ABC radio on the Richard Stubbs show to talk about their experiences of mentoring. That same afternoon, Mark Watt appeared on 3CR talking about all Whitelion programs and promoting the 10 year anniversary Gala Ball on 14th November. And finally, Josh Spiller, a mentee from Geelong, starred on the airwaves on 94.7 The Pulse: Roads to Recovery show, with Mentoring Team Leader Allison Trethowan on Tuesday 27th October.
The week will culminate in a visit to the zoo by all Whitelion Victorian Mentoring programs, thanks to the Victorian Youth Mentoring Alliance providing free tickets for mentors and young people. This will be a great chance for mentors and young people involved with Whitelion around the state to get together and enjoy a fantastic day out together.
