Break Through is an employment focused mentoring program that looks to improve the chances of young people (16-25 years) gaining and maintaining meaningful employment by giving them the opportunity to work 1:1 with a mentor from the local business community.
Our program tackles the widespread issue of high youth unemployment in the Macarthur Region and the lack of natural role models which has a direct impact on these statistics. The program is offered to young people who are ready to enter employment but may be experiencing multiple barriers.
The aim of the program is to assist young people to overcome these barriers and to improve their skills, knowledge base and confidence to go out and find employment and be able to sustain it. Through working with their mentors, the young people learn the realities of the workforce, what is required of employees in the current work climate and develop a career pathway for themselves; which may or may not include further education.
We overcome these barriers by linking young people with a currently employed mentor that works in the local area. Each mentor undergoes a 9-week TAFE accredited course and is then matched with a suitable young person. The mentor and young person then engage in 10 weekly one-hour mentoring sessions followed by 4 fortnightly one-hour mentoring sessions.
