BREAKING THE CYCLE
Whitelion supports young people to build better lives for themselves and helps make our community a more inclusive and safer place.
Each year thousands of young people are disconnected from our community due to abuse and neglect, drug addiction and poverty. These young people have often had horrific life experiences with few positive role models and are caught in a 'cycle of discouragement' that is very hard to break. Many of these young people end up in Out-of-Home Care and in some cases in the Youth Justice System.
CEO MESSAGE
An increasing number of people who work in the youth justice arena are calling for greater emphasis on diversion and preventative programs. I am proud to say that Whitelion already does this work – and has been doing so for ten years. Ten years of working with young people in detention centres to divert the path of their lives away from crime, custody and the cycle of disadvantage they have been trapped in. Ten years of providing a chance for them to form positive relationships through real-life mentors. Ten years of helping them find self esteem and purpose following their release, by connecting them with real jobs.
Ten years of making a real, and lasting, difference.
All of us at Whitelion remain as committed to making a difference today as the original team were when Whitelion opened its doors in 1998. We still believe that when a young person ends up in custody, or is at risk of entering the custody system, that they should be offered a chance to reconnect with the community and change the course of their lives.
We invite you to join us on Saturday November 14 at the Melbourne Town Hall to celebrate the fantastic work that our supporters, employers, mentors and staff have done over the past ten years.
