New Whitelion team member Charles is meeting all his young people with kindness and support

Charles Oryem is one of our newest team members. Charles joined Whitelion’s Southern Homeless Youth Assistance Program (SHYAP) in Frankston as a youth outreach worker.

A typical day for Charles involves case management support for young people who are experiencing homelessness, and working closely with his teammates to support the young person to meet their goals.

Charles says he became a youth worker to show young people kindness and support. “I want to empower young people, and help us all understand their challenges and normalise negative stigma attached to seeking and receiving help, and negative stigma that can be attached to an individual or specific group of young people”.

What Charles enjoys most about his work at Whitelion is the support he gets from his colleagues and the opportunity to learn from them, as well as seeing young people get support when they need it.

“My favourite part is seeing all of those young people come out and give their own feedback about what they’ve achieved”.
