Whitelion Bail Out reaches over $160,000
May 09, 2013
Whitelion Bail Out is excited to announce that over $160,000 in bail money has been raised with over 260 inmates now registered nationally. That's an amazing effort so far - well done everyone!
For those aspiring inmates who have not yet registered but want to get involved, there's still time. But you must get in quick as we are only days away from locking up our Sydney inmates in the slammer and a mere three weeks out from the Melbourne Bail Out on 31 May.
Your participation in Whitelion Bail Out will go a long way to support young people at risk in your community, just take a look at these quotes to get an insight into the work you are supporting:
"We work with young people who experience a world which I have never experienced. By using the skills I have to potentially support them, I'm providing them with the opportunities I myself have had. By supporting these young people, you're supporting the community at large". Whitelion worker
"Whitelion is my support system pretty much. You know, you can go there and if you have a dream or you have something you want to do, or finish, or try, they'll do their utmost to help you get to that point. And then when you get to that point, they're there to support you so you don't fall..." Chloe, 20.

JAMES TALBOT KAMOEN- "AUSTRALIAN JOURNEY"
Mar 05, 2013
James Talbot-Kamoen has embarked on an incredible solo bike ride across Australia, with the aim of raising $8,000 for Whitelion. His arduous "Australian Journey" commenced on January 1st 2013. After cycling 1250km around Tasmania he caught the ferry to Melbourne where he travelled up the great ocean road, continuing on into Adelaide. He has now made his way through Victoria and South Australia and has tackled the very hot ride across the Nullarbor! He then hopes to travel up the West Coast of Western Australia and into Darwin, ride down through Alice Springs, and back down to Adelaide where his journey will finally come to an end in July.
He is driven by personal reasons to complete this ride and he appreciates and acknowledges the work that Whitelion does to support youth at risk in our community.
"The reason I chose Whitelion is because of my brother who succumbed to a heavy drug addiction late in his teenage years. Not only was he a brother but also a guardian through my school years and role model throughout my childhood"
Rather than letting his feelings of anger and resentment grow, James decided it was time to help those like his brother, and to put his feelings into action by conquering this massive feat. Feel free to follow James's progress and give him some words of encouragement by visiting his Facebook page, www.facebook.com/AusJourney. In order to help James reach his fundraising target, donate to his everyday hero page by following the link provided: https://give.everydayhero.com/au/ausjourney.
On behalf of the board, our staff and the young people we work with, a big thank you must be extended to James on his "Australian Journey" which will enable us to continue our work to give young people the courage to choose a better future.

SCOTT MCGRAW'S EUREKA CLIMB EVEREST CHALLENGE
Oct 18, 2012
On Thursday 18th October, local Melbourne fireman Scott McGraw undertook an amazing feat to raise awareness for the Eureka Climb event taking place on 18th November. Starting at 6.10am, Scott began his gruelling mission - to climb the 88 levels of the Eureka Tower 31 times. By the end of the day Scott would have climbed just under 51,000 steps, the equivalent of Mount in Everest- in one day!
With the amazing support of Progressive PR, Scotty's mission gained a huge scope of media coverage which started with live weather crosses on channel 9's "Today show" with Emma Freedman. By 7 am "The Breakfast Show" which airs on channel 10 also caught wind of Scott's courageous challenge. It was not too long before channel 7, 9, 10 and ABC were all at the Eureka Tower covering the story.
Throughout the day supporters came out in all forms to cheer on Scott as he finished each lap, from interested tourists, school excursion groups, even the camera crews! With the help of his fire fighter mates and some Whitelion, Interplast and King Performance runners Scott finally accomplished his goal. At 5.15pm Scott crossed the finish line after completing the climb in an unbelievable time of 11 hours, 16 minutes and 27 seconds.
Scott crossed the finish line of the Everest Challenge to a hero's welcome, where he was embraced by his Melbourne Fire Brigade comrades, Whitelion and Interplast staff, Ben from King Performance, curious passers-by, school children and of course, every national television news station on free to air. After two hours of press (and a live cross to channel 10's "The Project") Scott definitely deserved a good night's sleep.
A huge thank you must go to Scott McGraw, but also to his support crew from Melbourne Fire Brigade (MFB), Progressive PR, King Performance, Eureka Tower, Eureka Skydeck 88, Interplast and our amazing Whitelion volunteers and staff.

"VOCATIONAL SUPPORT & COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP" ROTARY AWARD WINNER
Oct 16, 2012
We are really excited to announce that Whitelion were successful in winning a 2012 Rotary Club Award for the category of "Vocational Support & Community Leadership" and came in 2nd overall for Whitelion's successful partnership with the TOLL Group.
These awards are set in place in order to recognise the relationship between Community Service Organisations and their support partners. This program celebrates the vital contribution of Corporate Social Responsibility, Philanthropy and other forms of business, government and Community support to the non-profit sector, formally acknowledging their contribution to the broader community.
The partnership between Whitelion and TOLL Group began in 2006. It was identified that both organisations shared a vision of supporting young men and women who had previously been in custody or who were at risk of offending. TOLL's Second Step Program provides forty placements per year within the organisation. Whitelion works in partnership with TOLL in order to support these young people into long-term careers which helps to break the cycle of reoffending and disadvantage. The level of support provided by TOLL Group is critical to young people as they strive to succeed in their employment placement. TOLL Group has shown great flexibility, practical support and commitment to the young people they have employed resulting in a number of positive outcomes vulnerable young people.
Whitelion would like to acknowledge and thank the team at TOLL Group for their contribution, passion and commitment to supporting young people.
We hope that by having this partnership recognised it will encourage and inspire other such partnerships to develop, contributing to changing the lives of vulnerable young people in our society.

MENTORING MATTERS TO JAMIE RAMSAY
Sep 30, 2012
Jamie Ramsay began volunteering as a Whitelion mentor in 2004 after seeing the positive impact Whitelion's programs had on his younger brother Shaun. Shaun had engaged with Whitelion's employment and Young Lion's leadership program. This involvement assisted Shaun in making positive changes in his life. Jamie and Shaun experienced difficulties throughout their childhood and Jamie could see the value of Whitelion's programs and wanted to take on the challenge of helping young people - something he had not received himself. He wanted the young people we work with to know that someone was there to take an interest in them as they navigated adolescence.
During his 10 years of dedication to Whitelion, Jamie has formally mentored two young people and has had a strong impact on countless others through his regular attendance at community day activities and Youth Muster camps.
Jamie has also assisted Whitelion by raising much needed funds though participating in various fundraising events such as the Bail Out, 3 Peaks challenge and the Eureka Tower climb where he personally raised enough money to cover the fundraising fee for four young people to participate in the climb. Jamie has also contributed to the Mentor Reference Group providing input into program development within the Mentoring Programs, and has also assisted in other areas across the organisation.
Jamie promotes Whitelion in a range of settings, including through his workplaces over the last 10 years. He has hosted fundraising BBQ's and morning tea's, whilst promoting the Whitelion cause. He has appeared in local leader newspapers calling out to other men, urging them to become involved when Whitelion has needed it most.
Jamie recently took time to travel abroad, and began volunteering in Cambodia. He spent five weeks teaching English in a school just outside Phnom Penh.
"Teaching at BBJ was an amazing experience that I would like to do again in the future, I will never forget it. The school has been set up with donations from BBJ (a Dutch Organisation) and donations from various volunteers with the aim to teach English to underprivileged children who are living in the slums of outer Phnom Penh.."
In May 2012 Whitelion introduced a new award to acknowledge the long service of volunteers who had been involved with the organisation for five or more years. Upon reflecting on Jamie's service, it was noted that his commitment and dedication had spanned 10 years, a truly special feat.
In an age where the community's trend in volunteering has shifted toward short bursts of volunteering, Jamie has stood the test of time and stands out as an invaluable asset to Whitelion.

PRESENTING STREETBEATS... DRUMROLL PLEASE
Sep 15, 2012
In July 2012, in partnership with the School of Hard Knocks Institute, Whitelion began a new pilot program, 'Street Beats'. StreetBeats works with young people to participate in structured learning; introducing both instrumental skills as well as 'pre-vocational' skills such as respect, communication, team work, and expectations on attendance. Most of all, StreetBeats encourages young people to meet and interact with new people, develop friendships and most importantly have fun!
Kicking off at the Youth Muster Camp in Toolangi, our attendees undertook a 60 minute workshop of African Drumming. From this, a group of between 10-16 young people, staff and mentors attended weekly African drumming sessions in order to learn and develop these new skills. The sessions were held at the MCG and in the Lindsay Hasset Room: as well as providing a wonderful venue, the MCG also contributed catering to the program.
After nine weeks of practise the group had the opportunity to perform in the MCC Dining Room for the Whitelion AFL Finals Series Luncheon on Thursday 6th September. All nerves were well disguised and the StreetBeats group performed two songs - even showing Mark Watt, Glen Manton, and Andrew Gaze just how hard it can be staying in time to the rhythm!
Not long after their debut performance, StreetBeats had the amazing opportunity to play for the School of Hard Knocks Institute Gala and Launch held at the BMW Edge in Federation Square on Thursday 13th September. The group performed a solo piece and then accompanied the Choir of Hope and Inspiration in a truly amazing performance.
Involvement in such a program for these young people has shown remarkably positive transformations in the group through increased musical abilities, confidence, attendance, and the enjoyment in learning new skills.
Thanks to all staff involved in the program from bothWhitelion and Streetbeats, the MCG and to the Newsboys Foundation for sponsoring the pilot program.
We hope to continue running StreetBeats as an ongoing program so if you are a young person or mentor interested in joining us, please let Kelly Swain know at: kelly.swain@whitelion.asn.au. If you are interested in sponsoring the program please get in contact with Corporate Partnerships Manager Karen Livingstone on Karen.Livingstone@whitelion.asn.au or 03 8354 0800.

HEAD OFFICE RELOCATION
Aug 19, 2012
This is a time of historic significance for Whitelion! We farewelled the building that has been our home for the past 12 years in Melbourne, the old Torana Youth Detention facility in Parkville. This has been Whitelion's 'spiritual home' since we first started providing support programs for vulnerable young people back in 1999. Since then we have expanded into over 15 sites in four states - but the old, crumbling building in Parkville was always our home. It was a sad goodbye - but an exciting new beginning for us as we move to a new building in West Melbourne.
This move has been made even more exciting by the fact that we are sharing West Melbourne with Open Family Australia, with whom Whitelion merged in December 2011. There are over 40 Head Office and Program staff in our new building - we are now one big team - and best of all, we will have a dedicated youth space; a safe and vibrant environment where we can welcome in the young people we work with!
We are settling well into our new home. The colour is starting to be splashed on the walls making it a very bright and welcoming environment. Each day we come to work we are impressed with the environment we now work in which reflects on the growth and direction the organisation has achieved. Due acknowledgement and sincere thanks to the following organisations for making our relocation possible through their generosity and dedication:

Adelaide Bail Out
Aug 16, 2012
The inaugural Adelaide Bail Out was held on Thursday 16th August, with over 90 inmates being locked up at the Adelaide Goal and raising more than $80,000.
We are pleased to announce that the National Bail Out campaign is on track to set a phenomenal fundraising tally, a record for Whitelion with over $515,000 raised so far! But we haven't closed the fundraising yet, so you still have time to donation as you help us to raise much needed funds to support youth at risk... simply visit www.whitelionbailout.org.au
All reports from inmates regarding their experience have been exceptionally favourable (despite the rain trying to dampen our spirits), resulting in a greater understanding of what it is like to step into the shoes of a young person that has been disconnected from our community.
Together, we are helping to support young people at risk in the Australian community.
We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all those that made the night possible - our wonderful inmates, supporters, volunteers, sponsors, and staff! Thank you very much for your contribution and involvement in this year's Adelaide Bail Out Event and we look forward to continuing to work together in the future.
Whitelion extends a huge Thank You to all our sponsors who assisted us to make the night such a success.
Thank you to Schweppes Whitelion's major sponsor along with Adelaide Bail Out Sponsors; Adelaide Gaol as venue partner, Coopers as beer sponsor, d"Arenberg as wine sponsor, along with Maggie Beer and The Farm Barossa Function Centre as catering sponsors.
Whitelion would also like to acknowledge and thank the teams at SAFM and Triple M for all their wonderful help in promoting the Whitelion Bail Out on radio throughout Adelaide on Mix, Cruise and 5AA!

STREET ART LANE TOUR
Aug 04, 2012
On Saturday August 4th Whitelion, with the support of CREATE, ran a Street Art Lane Tour Community Day in the CBD. Earlier this year, Whitelion and CREATE formed a partnership to holistically work together to positively reconnect young people from out-of-home care and youth justice back into the community.
A total of 20 young people and volunteer mentors met in the city where they made their way through the backstreets of Melbourne city which encompasses inspirational street art. The group were educated about the influential meanings behind street art, from achieving a vibrant urban culture to providing artists with a powerful platform of expressing political protests. Following the tour, the group enjoyed a delicious lunch at Federation Square while taking the time to reflect and share the day's learnings with other mentors and young people.
We would like to thank the young people, mentors, CREATE Foundation and Whitelion staff for making the day an absolute success.

National Volunteer Week 2012
May 14, 2012
National Volunteer Week 2012 (14-20 May) saw Whitelion celebrate our volunteers. In Victoria alone we held three dinners across the state, in Morwell, Bendigo and Melbourne.
The Melbourne event held at the Metropolitan Hotel hosted volunteers from Whitelion's past events, and volunteers involved in our Mentoring, Employment and Youth Programs. At this event we witnessed the introduction of two new awards, which were put in place to recognise Whitelion's dedicated volunteers
Throughout Whitelion's short 12 years' history of supporting youth at risk we have had many valued volunteers support us in a range of different ways, from mentoring, through providing role modelling in youth justice settings, to giving a young person a job . Some stay for a short time whilst others have been involved with Whitelion for years - and we could not provide our services without them! Whitelion's volunteers are the backbone of our organisation and are crucial to in helping us achieve our goals.
We felt that the National Volunteer Week was the perfect vehicle to show our appreciation to the long service of various volunteers across the organisation. We are delighted to announce and acknowledge those who have provided five or more years of volunteer service to Whitelion. These awards were presented to:

*(who it turns out should be receiving an award for 10 years' service rather than 5!)
Our CEO Mark Watt also used the event as an opportunity to coin a new CEO's award, put in place to recognise valued volunteers who have gone above and beyond their initial commitments. The new award, named "Golden Lion" was presented:
Both volunteers have championed Whitelion within their workplaces, gathering further support for our work at every opportunity. They have both supplied monumental amounts of their time to support Whitelion's fundraising initiatives and events. They have also been particularly helpful to our upcoming move as we venture to a new building in West Melbourne.
We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our guest speaker for the night, Richard Maloney from The Sports Leadership Coach for taking the time out of his busy schedule to come and join in our celebration.
Congratulations to our long service volunteers and a huge thank you to all the volunteers that contribute to our work each and every day, We could not change the lives of so many at-risk young people without the hard work and commitment of our volunteers. Thank you.

Telstra partners to support youth at risk
May 01, 2012
Whitelion are excited to be working in partnership with Telstra's Docklands Contact Centre in placing young people into supported customer service positions.
This project will involve a tailored training program delivered by Telstra and AEGIS Aspire. Young people will have the opportunity to work towards completing a Certificate III in Customer Contact and each participant will be matched with a workplace buddy who has attended training delivered by the Victorian Employment team. Once placed, young people will have continued support from their Whitelion Employment Worker to ensure that they are tracking well both professionally and personally.
Whitelion are looking forward to growing this important partnership and working together in providing long-term, sustainable and supported career opportunities.

Camp Inspires Youth Leaders
Mar 17, 2012
Each year the Young Lions program holds a leadership camp for youth at risk. This year's camp commenced with great anticipation on Friday 16th March at Cottage by the Sea in Queenscliff and was attended by both young people, Whitelion staff and our ever reliable volunteer Vic. The aim was to allow the group of young people to bond together and determine if they have what it takes to become a Young Lion.
The weekend provided for some fantastic weather which allowed for a great morning of surfing and a leisured afternoon to take on the challenge of the wooden maze and mini golf in Wallington. Throughout their time at camp the Young Lions successfully completed several modules including Values, Problem solving, Goal setting, Team work and Self-care.
Seven young people are now ready to take on the challenge of becoming this year's Young Lions. This group left camp on Sunday, with the view to continue to challenge themselves throughout the year in a safe environment. Overall the camp was an astounding success with the Young Lions developing goals to achieve on their time in the program and we look forward to sharing more stories as they continue on their leadership journey throughout 2012.

9th Annual KFC (Yum) Charity Golf Day
Mar 14, 2012
The much anticipated 9th Annual KFC (Yum) Victorian Charity Golf Day was recently held on Wednesday 14th March at the Waterford Valley Golf Club, Knoxfield.
The golf day was attended by Yum head office management, KFC Franchisee owners and staff, Yum suppliers and various corporates with a strong interest in assisting the fundraising efforts of Whitelion.
Highlights from the event included the unusually warm weather, a competitive team spirit, and the unmistakable enthusiasm from each of the golfers to reach into their pockets and support each fundraising activity.
It was also fantastic to see our Co-Founders, Mark Watt and Glenn Manton at the dinner, a rare occurrence in their typically busy schedules. Glenn took the reins as MC for the dinner adding a distinct element of entertainment to the evening's proceedings.
KFC has been an integral contributor to Whitelion over the years, supporting disadvantaged young people with employment opportunities and helping to raise much needed funds. This event raised in excess of $23,000 through player registrations, donations and auctions - a fantastic effort from all those involved.
Congratulations and thank you to KFC (Yum) and all those involved on another very successful KFC (Yum) Victorian Charity Golf Day.

Mentoring Create Beach Fun
Feb 04, 2012
2012 has started off with great enthusiasm and energy for the Melbourne Leaving Care, Custodial and Community Youth Justice Mentoring Programs, with the annual beach community day launching a fresh new year and a fresh new working relationship with the Create foundation at Altona Beach on Saturday 4th February.
Whitelion Mentoring and Create staff have worked closely in the past few months to come up with new ways of working together, sharing resources and supporting each other's work, and this paid off for everyone at the beach day, especially for the young people involved.
25 young people and mentors from Whitelion, 9 young people from the Create Youth Advisory Group, and 9 staff from both Create and Whitelion participated on the day, with Create staff facilitating lots of different fun activities on the sand. During the breaks there were games of beach cricket (on the sand and in the water!), water fights, sun tanning (no burning!) and an awesome BBQ lunch with lovely refreshing drinks kindly provided by Schweppes.
On a more serious note, the day provided the young people with the opportunity to give their feedback to CREATE staff about their thoughts and feelings on their care experience, a valuable opportunity for Whitelion's young people to have their voices heard, and also for Create staff to gather this information to help them advocate for young people in care in areas of policy development and reform.
Our thanks goes to Gill and Renee from Whitelion Mentoring and Kristie and Amanda from Create for organising and facilitating such a fantastic day.

THE GREAT JIM STYNES
Mar 20, 2012
Whitelion is mourning the loss of the great Jim Stynes. Jim was an inspirational leader, with a strong passion for social justice and young people, who stood for so much in our community. Whitelion is proud to have a partnership with the REACH Foundation, through the RAMP Program.
The RAMP Program is something that Whitelion is very proud of, it combines our mentoring expertise with The Reach Foundation's positive experiential workshop and camp format.
We aim to continue this partnership and will together ensure that Jim's belief in the potential of all young people lives on. Our thoughts are with Jim's family and loved ones at this difficult time.

VISIT FROM MINISTER COLLINS
Mar 07, 2012
The Minister for Indigenous Employment and Economic Development, Julie Collins MP, visited Whitelion's head office in Melbourne in early March. Minister Collins announced funding for our new Indigenous Employment Program (IEP).
The IEP program is designed to help vulnerable Indigenous young people stay out of the juvenile justice system through training and employment.
Around 60 disadvantaged Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people who have experienced or are at risk of having contact with the youth justice system will receive jobs training and support, with the aim of sustainable employment for up to 24 participants.
Whilst visiting the Parkville site, Minister Collins said; "It's heartening to see this program could place into sustainable jobs 24 young people who currently have serious barriers to employment.
'Whitelion will also provide intensive support to others who are not ready for employment to put them on the path to sustainable jobs,' Ms Collins added.
Funding for the project is through the Australian Government's $650 million Indigenous Employment Program, as part of its commitment to halve the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous employment outcomes within a decade.

BAIL OUT 2012
Feb 28, 2012
We proudly announce that the Whitelion Bail Out website for 2012 has been launched today!
The Bail Out is Whitelion's national fundraising and awareness campaign. Bail Out provides a unique opportunity to step into the shoes of a young person that has been disconnected from our community due to abuse and neglect, drug addiction and poverty.
We are encouraging everyone to get involved in this year's campaign by registering to 'bail out' at one of the official Bail Out events in Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales or South Australia, or register to host a 'Break Out' event. This year we are hoping to raise $500,000 to help young people at risk in the Australian community.

FIVE IN FIVE CAMPAIGN
Jan 20, 2012
Five in Five is a fundraising campaign that challenges single people to go on five dates in five weeks to help combat urban poverty.
The challenge brings back old school dating. Before the internet people relied on face-to-face introductions and the good old art of talking to strangers. The beauty of the challenge is that it gives you an opening and it is made easier because it's for charity.
People can register to participate via the Five in Five website - www.fiveinfive.org.au. The website contains ideas on how to meet people and get tips for successful dating.
